Usage Restriction: Both engine rooms and lower berthing need more restoration and are currently closed to the public. We will install engines in the engine rooms but the timeline is TBD. It may be a couple more years until we are substantially done.

USS Lucid (MSO-458) - Wood Minesweeper

United States / Stockton, California
Location ID: #10266910

The USS Lucid is a Vietnam War era Aggressive Class Ocean Going Wooden Minesweeper that is about 85% restored to its authentic build during service, with restoration ongoing. The public is only allowed onto the ship twice a year, usually in April & October for a one-day each biannual Open House. Otherwise, small groups of volunteers are on board every week off and on, and every 2nd and 4th Saturday morning and afternoons during work parties. Special private tours also occur on an ongoing basis.

There are a number of fully restored interior compartments including the Galley, Wardroom, Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Quarters, Mess decks, Sickbay, Radio Central, Captain’s Cabin, Pilot House, Combat Information Center (CIC), forward berthing, sick bay, and junior officers quarters. The outside decks provide views of the Stockton Delta, where Lucid is currently moored.

The ship is completely non-magnetic and made completely of wood and non-ferrous metals (eg. bronze). The ship houses a collection of sailor uniforms, navigating tools, plaques, dishes, ship manuals, ship plans, and more that add to the authentic experience once on board. It also has armaments, anchors, wood plugs, and other authentic gear. The fantail has an awning to protect from rain and sun. The ship does not run on its own power, but has working bathrooms and electricity on board. The main non-authentic feature is the ship's gift store, not viewable from the exterior.

Lucid is privately owned by the Stockton Maritime Museum, a 501(c)3 organization. This non profit is all volunteer led, and the team has focused efforts on restoring Lucid as authentically as possible since 2012.
