Mokelumne Hill is a census-designated place in Calaveras County. Founded in 1848, it was one of the richest gold mining towns in California. Mokelumne Hill is nestled on a small flat surrounded by hills and within a few miles of the Mokelumne River. The first inhabitants of the village were the Miwok Indians who lived along the Mokelumne River.
