Description:
Comprised of the War Memorial Opera House, Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, Herbst Theatre, The Green Room, The Wilsey Center (Atrium Theater, Education Studio), and Harold L. Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall, the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center (the War Memorial) is a landmark cultural institution owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco. Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall opened in 1980 as the home of the San Francisco Symphony. Collaboratively designed by architects and acousticians to create an auditorium that allows sound to rise to its very top, this modern but warm space captures and diffuses music throughout the audience, creating an intimate setting that belies the stature of the building itself. The Davies Symphony Hall Organ is one of the largest concert hall organs in North America. It is designed to play all organ literature from pre-baroque through contemporary periods. With sweeping views of San Francisco City Hall and the War Memorial Opera House, the curved glass-enclosed lobby offers an unmatched view of San Francisco’s Civic Center. The 2739-seat auditorium is ideal for concerts, speakers, readings and presentations. Named for the most generous benefactor of its construction, Louise M. Davies, Symphony Hall is dedicated to the joy of music. The War Memorial Opera House designed by Arthur Brown, Jr., the prominent American architect who also created San Francisco City Hall, this cultural landmark is one of the last Beaux-Arts structures built in the United States. Today, the stately building is host to a variety of events. In addition to our resident company opera and ballet performances, the 3006-seat auditorium may be available for lectures, classical concerts, recitals, and other performances that can be installed within an existing production. With its ornate features and 38-foot ceiling, the grand Main Lobby makes an unforgettable setting for elegant cocktail receptions and sit-down dinners. The War Memorial Opera House is one of the Bay Area’s most sought-after and unique venues, offering modern technology and the ambiance of old-world theaters. The Herbst Theatre adorned by a series of stunning Frank Brangwyn murals originally painted for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the Herbst is also distinguished as the site of the United Nations Charter signing in 1945. The Herbst Theatre Housed in the Veterans Building, which echoes the Beaux-Arts design of the War Memorial Opera House, the 892-seat auditorium is the venue for many Bay Area cultural and community organizations, including San Francisco Performances, African American Shakespeare Company the Prism Foundation, and the San Francisco Philharmonic.
