After winding along rolling hills and passing through the picturesque Anderson Valley, Highway 128 suddenly takes you through an eleven-mile-long forest tunnel of second growth redwoods. A magnificent sight. Situated nearly in parellel with the Navarro River.
People who visit the park can stop along certain spots for picnicking, swimming, and some hiking. River access for boating is located at the northern end, just south of the Navarro River Bridge.
The Paul M. Dimmick campground has now reopened with all 11 miles of this popular road corridor repaved.
Site Condition
This park is located 140 miles north of San Francisco. There are no obvious signs indicating where the park boundries lie. Generally, you start entering the Navarro River State Park about 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 miles due west from the unincoproated community of Navarro. At 6 miles, you'll come across the Paul M. Demmick Campground. A few short, unmarked trails are publically accessible from the highway, leading through redwood groves, and with access to either sandy or stony beaches. The area is known for winter flooding but leaves little traces upon springtime.
At 14-1/2 miles (near the Highway 1 & 128 junction) is the Navarro River Beach, located at the river's mouth where there is more available campsites. The beach is accessible by a road located immediately on the right after passing over the Navarro River Bridge, going southward. The Navarro River is subject to winter flooding with beach sands changing shape seasonally. Warmer seasons bring increased sand mass, sealing up the river's mouth.
